Why car repair certifications matter to customers.How do you find out if a vehicle service shop has certified technicians? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you. I know, it’s cheesy, but it’s also true. When auto technicians hold factory certifications or the ASE Certification, it’s a talking point. After all, in order to become certified, technicians must receive training, pass exams, and stay up-to-date as new information becomes available.

But, what does this all mean for the customer? How do car repair certifications benefit those seeking auto repair services?

The Value of Car Repair Certifications

When a service shop advertises that their technicians are certified, what they’re really saying is their employees have gone through additional education, beyond what’s expected or required.

You see, auto techs are not legally required to hold certifications in order to service vehicles. And, it’s the individual technicians who hold certifications, not the service shops. Also, car repair certifications are not all the same. They have different standards and provide different types of value. That’s why I’ve taken two of the most common types of certifications and outlined how they benefit the customer.

ASE Certification: Customer Benefits

An ASE Certified technician has met the following qualifications:

  • Received two years of on-the-job training
  • Obtained two-year degree in automotive repair
  • Passed the ASE Certification test

ASE developed this certification in order to promote excellent automotive repair and service, while protecting and providing peace of mind to the customer.

Factory Certifications: Customer Benefits

In addition to ASE, some auto technicians also seek out factory certifications. These certifications make someone a specialist in a particular make of vehicles. Factory certifications are most common in dealership-owned service shops where certain technicians will maintain certifications in the makes the dealership specializes in. 

For instance, at Miller Auto & Marine, we have technicians who are Nissan, Lincoln, Buick, and/or GMC certified. To maintain factory certifications, technicians must know the vehicles like the back of their hands. Technicians receive regular testing and continuing education to ensure they’re as knowledgeable as possible.

Passing Value onto the Customer

In the majority of situations, the technicians you’ll work with at independent service shops are what’s known as all-make mechanics. This means they have a jack-of-all-trades type of expertise when it comes to auto repair, but it also might mean they lack specialized training. If you’re looking to trust your vehicle’s service to technicians who know your vehicle inside-and-out, certifications matter. They ensure the technician who’s working on your vehicle is above and beyond qualified to do so.
